The Montessori model of education was developed in Italy by Dr. Maria Montessori. She created a method of teaching that allows children to discover their own world. Relying on the five senses, children are led rather than taught. This allows instructors to act as a guide rather than an instructor.

SMCC's Montessori Early Childhood courses are designed for:

• Aspiring educators who plan to enter the field of Montessori education in preschools
• Teachers who would like to use the Montessori model of learning for remedial education for children in grades 1-4
• Special Education instructors who would like to increase retention by incorporating concrete materials to develop skills and abstract ideas.
• Preschool, kindergarten and primary teachers who wish to use the Montessori Method in their classrooms

The SMCC Montessori Teacher Education Program is fully accredited by the Montessori Accreditation Council for Teacher Education.
